This matrix was originally compiled in May of 2007. Updates will be added over time.

You can always double-check by doing some research at http://celebrator.com

Detailed directions and addresses should be gleaned from the pub/breweries website- that's why it's not here.

The few places without a website (shame on them) or that we haven't ever visited aren't listed.

San Francisco Breweries and Pubs

21st Amendment
If you listen to the show, you'll know that this is one of our favorites. Check to see if the Giants are in town during baseball season, yet the place handles the crowds well.

2.5 blocks from the ballpark, and it's stop on the T and J streetcar lines and on the 10 bus line.

Anchor Brewery
It's the "Anchor" brewery, not the "Anchor Steam" brewery. Sorry, a pet peeve of mine. Plan ahead and reserve a spot on the tour. The granddaddy of good beer. Liberty Ale (the first IPA) and Steam are available at most bars, and there's actually an Anchor pub at SFO with all the beer on tap.

Off the 10, 19 and 22 lines.

Beach Chalet Brewery
The place to see the sun set or sit in a lawn chair and drink good beer. At the end of Golden Gate Park and on the edge of the North American continent.

Take either the 5 or 38 buses all the way to the beach, or the N streetcar and take a short walk.

Gordon Biersch
The third in the now national brewery/restaurant group. GB's original awe-inspiring German brewing machine. A great place to watch the reflection of the sunset against the Bay Bridge and East Bay hills.

Folsom Street stop on the T and J streetcar lines, or just a short walk from the Ferry Building.

Magnolia Brewery
The spirit of the Haight-Ashbury and the home of English Ales, Kolsch and Alt, and fat IPAs in San Francisco. Total commitment to sustainabilty and tasty food, also.

6, 7 or 71 bus from downtown or the 43 bus from the Marina/Presidio.

San Francisco Brewing
A real authentic bar from the Barbary Coast days, when there was still danger lurking in North Beach. Drink like it's 1909.

A block from the pyramid, or take the 9X to Kearny and Columbus.

Speakeasy Ales & Lagers
Out there, and a brewery, so the time to visit is their Friday open house/sideshow. But their beer is on tap all over the City and available in bottles to drink anywhere.

Take the T streetcar to Evans and walk about 0.5 miles east. Or take a cab...

Thirsty Bear Brewing
Closest to Moscone Center (for you business travelers) and makers of a great vanilla beer (if you like vanilla) and the BEST German beer in San Francisco. IPAs and the other stuff, too, to compliment tasty Spanish food.

One-half block east of Moscone Center on Howard Street, or one-half block south of the SFMOMA. Close to everything.

Toronado
Best beer bar in the WORLD! If you disagree, you are wrong. Sorry. Go in the middle of a weekday afternoon if you want to investigate the depth of the tap and bottle list, to avoid the crowds. Also, it's still $2.50/pint until 6pm EVERYDAY!

6, 7 or 71 bus from downtown, three block walk from the N streetcar via Duboce Park, or take the 22 bus from the Mission or Marina.

Zeitgiest
San Francisco's (never San Fran) beergarden. This is where you get to see the real working people of San Francisco, or at least folks who dress like they work for a living. Amazing place that probably is hard to duplicate anywhere else, except maybe Berlin.

Take any streetcar in the subway to Van Ness Station or the F streetcar to ##### and walk three blocks to Valencia and two south to Duboce, or take BART to 16th Street and walk one block west to Valencia and three north to Duboce. Or follow any bike messenger when they finish their day...

Breweries and Pubs accessible from BART

Fremont Line (Green or Orange line south of Oakland)

Buffalo Bill's Brewery
First or second brewpub in California. I can never remember which.

Five blocks east of the Hayward BART station.

Drake's Brewing
Like Speakeasy above, a brewery-only that hosts a Friday afternoon party with tours available, if you ask nice. Thier beer is available on tap around the area and in six-packs at many stores.

About a 20-minute walk eaast from the San Leandro BART station, or a short cab ride. Tell the cabbie that you're going to the Walmart, the brewery's right next to the loading docks.

The Bistro
A great little pub that hosts many beer festivals and has live music most nights. On the same block as Buffalo Bills.

Just like its neighbor, it's five blocks east of the Hayward BART station.

The Englander
A big sports pub, with a bunch of beer on tap.

About ten minutes east from the San Leandro BART station in downtown San Leandro.

Pittsburg/Bay Point Line (Yellow line east of Oakland)

E.J. Phair Brewing
Downtown Concord's brewpub. Nice selection of beer on a beautiful city square.

About ten minutes from the Concord BART station in downtown Concord.

Pyramid Brewing
While the big Pyramid brewery is in Berkeley, the pub in downtown Walnut Creek is easier to get to on transit.

About a 15-minute walk from the Walnut Creek BART station. There's also a bus that loops from the station through downtown.

Barclay's
A great pub in Oakland's Rockridge district. Large number of taps and great food, too. The East Bay's hang out for beer folks, including a number of brewers.

Just five minutes north of the Rockridge BART station.

Richmond Line (Red or Orange line north of Oakland)

Triple Rock Brewery
America's Oldest Original Brewpub and the southern anchor of Berkeley's gourmet ghetto. We're partial to 3Rock, that has great beer and one of the best hamburgers around. Also love the chili dogs and nachos. Looks like it's been there forever.

Four blocks north of the Berkeley (Berkeley, NOT North Berkeley) BART station. Make sure to check out the roof deck if the weather's good.

Jupiter
Same folks from Triple Rock offer a great multi-tap with an amazing set of courtyears to enjoy your beer and tasty food. They have their own beers on tap, along with a rotation of other great micros. Great pizzas and salads to go along with the beers, or rib-tips if you need a solid meat fix.

Right at the Berkeley BART station, on the east side of the street. You are NOT allowed to visit Jupiter until you've gone to Triple Rock.

Downtown Oakland (Red or Yellow line)

Pacific Coast Brewing
All-extract brewpub in a beautiful old brick building in "Old Oakland". Bar and stained glass windows are from the Oakland Museum, salvaged from a bar that was demolished for a freeway. Big, hoppy beers of their own and a selection of micros to compliment them.

Two blocks around the corner from the 12st Street BART station in Downtown Oakland.

Luka's Taproom and Lounge
Luka's a nice multitap in downtown Oakland that has excellent food and music at night.

Three blocks north of BART's 19th Street Station in Oakland.

Breweries and Pubs accessible from Caltrain

Steelhead Brewing
The Bay Area outpost of the venerable Eugene, Oregon brewery. Great space and comfortable backroom with couches and pool tables.

One block north of Caltrain's Burlingame station.

Gordon Biersch Brewing
Visit where it all started, in the true center of Silicon Valley, downtown Palo Alto. Drink with the über-coders and the filthy-rich venture capitalists. Hoist Märzen and Heffewizen and taste the beer from the orignial Gordon Biersch.

There's a second one in downtown San Jose but Palo Alto's our first choice.

Five blocks from Caltrain's Palo Alto station.

Tied House Cafe & Brewery
Home to the

Three blocks from the Mountain View Caltrain station.

FireHouse Grill & Brewery

Two blocks from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station.

Faultline Brewing
Best brewpub in a business campus setting. If you're interested to see what the Silicon Valley looks like, check out Faultline.

About a 15-minute walk north of the Lawrence Caltrain station.

Sonoma Chicken Co-Op
This one might be a stretch, but nice beer and an interesting cafeteria-style dining experience.

In downtown Campbell- take the light rail from the San Jose station to the Campbell stop and then walk three blocks west.
